I have reviewed many smartphone cases over the years. Invariably, the focus is on protecting the device from minor drops and sometimes from water. However, if you’re using a smartphone in extreme conditions (and extreme may just mean sitting on the beach), you may have noticed something missing. Your smartphone can overheat and shut down. And even if today’s smartphones are waterproof or at least water resistant, they still sink like a rock if you accidentally drop them in water. The PHOOZY XP3 is a smartphone “case” that protects your device from temperature extremes, keeps it afloat in water and also offers high performance drop protection.
And it looks pretty cool, too.
Smartphones Are Sensitive to Temperature
If you’ve ever driven with your smartphone on the dashboard on a hot, sunny day, or tried to send a text outdoors on a frigid February day you may have discovered firsthand that these devices are sensitive to temperature extremes.
I’ve had multiple occasions where I wasn’t getting the notifications I was expecting and when I checked my iPhone, found it displaying this temperature warning screen. It can happen anytime when you’re outdoors on a very hot day or the phone is exposed to direct sunlight. Apple says an iPhone should be operated in temperatures from 32º to 95º F, which means there are a lot of scenarios — from walking on a cold winter day to sitting by the beach — where the iPhone isn’t operating at top performance. You can see issues like poor cellular reception, reduced performance and diminished battery life before the iPhone ultimately shuts itself down. The annoying thing is you may not even realize it happened until you check to see why everything’s been quiet.
This sensitivity to temperature isn’t exclusive to Apple either, it can affect any smartphone.
PHOOZY XP3 Protects From temperature Extremes
The PHOOZY XP3 is designed to protect your smartphone from the effects of temperature extremes. It’s not a traditional case, more like a storage pouch. You slide the phone inside and take it out when you need to use it. The case is lined with a Chromium thermal barrier that reflects 90% of solar radiation. It also contains a layered matrix of “NASA-inspired” material that protects against extreme heat and cold.
I used a PHOOZY XP3 Plus with my iPhone XS Max and there was plenty of room for the phone in its case — the XL size will fit a phone + case measuring up 7 x 4 x 0.5-inches. I spent several days at the beach in the blazing heat and with the phone safely enclosed in the PHOOZY it remained fully operational, streaming music to a wireless speaker and receiving notifications all day. There was also no noticeable additional drain on the battery. I made no effort to find a cool or shady spot, just left it on my armrest within easy reach. The downside is you have to slide the phone out of the PHOOZY if you want to use it, but it’s a quick operation that’s a minor inconvenience.
I wasn’t able to test it, but the company says that carrying your phone in the PHOOZY XP3 outdoors in the winter will prevent the rapid battery drain that often happens when exposed to extreme cold temperatures.
It Floats (With Your Phone Inside)!
The latest iPhone is IP68 water resistant, as are many Android smartphones. This emboldens people to bring their phones to events around the water — such as riding on a boat. However, that IP68 protection likely won’t save your phone if you accidentally drop it in deep water. In addition, because it will immediately sink, you’ll need to dive down to recover it. If you store your phone in the PHOOZY XP3, it will float for easy retrieval.
The PHOOZY case doesn’t keep water out (although it is water resistant for extra protection from rain or snow) and you’ll need to pull the phone out to access it, but for storage around water it provides peace of mind that if you accidentally drop it you’ll be able to reach in the water and easily retrieve it.
Another key advantage to the PHOOZY XP3 is impact protection. If you’re traveling with your phone, the case’s Impactor Core exceeds military drop-test standards (MIL-STD 810G 516.6) by more than two times — most rugged cases will protect from a six foot drop, but this one protects from drops of up to nine feet.
In addition, the case includes a velcro-secured internal stash pocket that can hold credit cards, ID and cash. It’s equipped with a multi-point attachment system so you can easily secure the case to a belt or carabiner or the company’s own Tether System. The surface itself (available in a variety of colors and patterns) is made from Ultraskin Ripstop material with UV and hydrophobic coatings that resists tearing, fading and is easily wiped clean. A pair of easy grip tabs make it easy to open the case and its velcro enclosure whether it’s wet or dry.
For everyday use, a regular smartphone case is plenty of protection for most people. But when the outdoors — and especially extreme temperatures and water are involved — the PHOOZY XP3 can be invaluable. It provides additional drop protection, keeps a dropped smartphone afloat and maintains operability during temperature extremes. If you travel or spend much time outdoors, the $49.99 investment is well worth it.
