MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – The Bay County Sheriff’s Office could soon add Mexico Beach to its jurisdiction.

According to Mexico Beach Mayor Al Cathey, the city council will hold a special meeting Tuesday afternoon to go over a proposal from the Sheriff’s Office to take over for the Mexico Beach Police Department.

Cathey says the police department takes up about 35 percent of the city’s budget and city leaders are trying to find ways to balance finances will still providing emergency services.

The meeting starts at 1 p.m. at Mexico Beach City Hall.
