Amid rumors of Apple’s upcoming AR glasses, head-mounted displays are looking to be the highest-growth category.
If you look around on your commute, you might think the wearables market is at a saturation point: AirPods or their equivalent in almost every ear, smartwatches secured to the wrists of most straphangers. But though the train car might be crowded, there’s plenty of room for people to put on a new wearable.
A Gartner report predicts that total spending on wearables will go from $32.5 billion in 2018 to $63 billion in 2021. The biggest jump will occur in smartwatches, on which people have already spent $12.4 billion. By 2021, that amount is expected to be $27.4 billion. New iterations of the Apple Watch, like the Series 5, have convinced more people to become customers.
Something unexpected in the Gartner report is about head-mounted displays—yes, the descendants of the vastly unpopular Google Glass: Apple will release AR glasses in 2020.
There are still a couple of years to find out whether these predictions pan out, but one thing is for sure: Wearables and their accessories will be popular gifts this coming holiday season.
